about

Social anxiety is the worst, but I’m doing better. When I was young and just starting out in the world, I was constantly fighting with my own head, welling up with tears when the older kids came around or hiding at home and preferring not to socialise at all. Danger Danger is about navigating that anxiety, growing out of it (or co-existing, maybe) and learning to be okay with those feelings.

Danger Danger is a country song at heart, led by a big, three-part harmony chorus that gets gently warped by warbly, 60s pop-style guitar tones, speedy lead lines and a general weirdness that reflects the anxiety below the surface. Too weird for the country kids, too country for the weirdos.

Produced and mixed by Zoran Lasich, mastered by Joe Carra of Crystal Mastering. Written by Malibu Spacey. Artwork by Alex Lowe.

lyrics

Back in the nineties,
I was a wimp,
The only good year
Was the blimp
Kids took my glasses
I need them
Four eyes,
Zero self esteem

Oh they call me chickenshit now honey,
Well they would be correct,
I’m playing dead,
Their piston fists are turning red

But I’m so scared,
I leave the lights on when I go to bed
And I know that,
The closer I get to danger
The further I get from myself

Grey hair years whipping by
Still time,
To prove I can be hard
Maybe I’ll do a crime

I’ve stolen wifi
But I’m reformed
And now I subscribe
With my wife

At heights my brain spins like a zoetrope
Lucille 2-style vertigo
I’m not alone
Weekly support groups in my home

I’m sensitised,
Imagine myself through someone else’s eyes
But I don’t look right
The closer I get to danger
The further I get from myself

Danger signs all around my mind
Danger signs, one million times
Danger danger danger danger danger
Danger danger danger danger danger

My taste in music’s soft
Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts
On cassette tapes that send me drifting off
I got a cactus cat scratch post
Decanted wine, Sunday roast,
But I can’t seem to shake this constant ghost

I’m sensitised,
Imagine myself through someone else’s eyes
But I don’t look right
The closer I get to danger
The further I get from myself
