Electrocutie

about

Electrocutie came during lockdown in 2020 - my phone voice memos reckon it was May. I had the word ‘Electrocutie’ written down in my phone because I’d been listening to the Babe Rainbow, misheard a line (I preferred it my way) and popped it in my pocket for later. I gave myself some on-going back troubles around that time because of my recording set up, which was a laptop and audio interface sitting on top of an empty wine rack and I sat hunched in front of it for hours every day doing demos because there really wasn’t much else to do at the time. I was planning on recording something else but instead I played a little chord change that instantly started the whole song just popping out. The first line is ‘my ideas crack through the sides’ and that’s what happened that time - it just sort of walked out of the guitar.

Electrocutie isn’t a song about anything in particular. It’s some lockdown and back pain-induced introspection - a few thoughts that must have floated through my mind at the time. It’s about feeling locked up, about the pressure to keep getting things done throughout that time, about how feelings like to come out with or without prompting and about losing yourself to thoughts when there’s not much else to distract you. When we went to record it, I nearly scrapped the lyrics because I thought it wasn’t cohesive and there’s no real narrative, but I ended up keeping everything as it was - a little time capsule for a period I’d rather not return to. ‘Sometimes I cry/Sometimes I breathe/Sometimes I run/Sometimes I dream’.

Special mention goes to our guitarist Zoran who recorded and mixed this. The man is not only a virtuoso guitarist but also an extremely talented engineer with the patience and skill to wrangle the best out of the rest of us. We went away to a house in Rye on the Mornington Peninsula for a very rainy weekend in late 2022 and came back with this, the first part of an album we’ll release later in the year.

lyrics

Sometimes I cry,
My ideas crack through the sides,
It’s not what I thought it was like,
When I dreamed it up

Sometimes I breathe,
As I do it occurs to me,
How strange to even be,
A fly on the wall

Electrocutie,
Electrocute me,
Electrocutie

Sometimes I run,
It’s either that or I scorch in the sun,
And when my day is done,
Just wither on the vine

Sometimes I dream,
I just pitch myself in the stream,
All choking, bubbling,
And making noise

Electrocutie,
Electrocute me,
Electrocutie
